Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, yesterday said huge advertising revenue had eluded Nigeria due to its inability to key into Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcasting.
Mohammed said that though Nigeria out-numbered South Africa in population, but South Africa, in terms of revenue from advertising, had far surpassed it.
The minister, who disclosed this at the official launch of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) from analogue to digital television by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) held at the NTA premises in Enugu yesterday, said: “The value of advertising revenue in Nigeria is lower than that of South Africa.”
He noted that Enugu was the third state in Nigeria where the Digital Switch Over launch had taken place after the pilot testing in Kwara and Kaduna states.
He said the present administration would not relent in ensuring that all parts of the country are hooked to digital broadcasting.
Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, said the state had procured 10,000 set top boxes of the NBC free TV for the 475 communities in the state to enable them have access to digital television.
The governor also disclosed that the 100 set top boxes donated by the minister at the occasion would be handed over to the security agencies in the state.
Ugwuanyi, who expressed joy that Enugu was the third state in Nigeria to benefit from the digital broadcasting, said that it was not easy for Nigeria to switch over to digital broadcasting as agreed in Geneva 10 years ago but that Nigeria was able to eventually break the jinx, hence the launch of the Digital Terrestrial Television in Enugu.”
